Coffee with Dr. Ravi #5 – Reflux and Barrett’s Esophagus

In this week’s video we are talking about the GI condition known as Barrett’s Esophagus.

● Barrett’s esophagus is the condition in which a metaplastic columnar epithelium that has both gastric and intestinal features replaces the stratified squamous epithelium that normally lines the distal esophagus.

● The condition develops as a consequence of chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and predisposes to the development of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. Treatment and prevention comes in the form of lifestyle modification, controlling risk factors and regular endoscopic surveillance.

Thanks again to Dr. Kalala for joining us this week on Coffee with Dr. Ravi.
